US-BASED TRADE GROUP TO IMPORT SHRIMP FROM THE PHILIPPINES

Back then, shrimp from the Philippines represented a large portion of the imported shrimp market in the US.  But since the late 1990’s, imported shrimp from Thailand, Vietnam and China have overtaken the market, which have triggered tariffs by the US government.

Shrimp farmers in the province of Samar in the Philippines, represented by a cooperative United Fish Farmers of St. Margarita (UFFSM), are on their way to changing the playing field.  Their group has committed a sizable portion of their farms to a new concept known as “Aqua Peace Farms”, a program incorporating best practices that assure healthy and consistent shrimp and other seafood for export to the United States.

BOCO Trade will assist these cooperative aquaculture farmers to improve their economic status in the Philippines by opening the market in the US for their products.  Eventually, the US market is expected to provide several millions of US dollars in imports of seafood per month from Philippine aquaculture farms.  “Purchases by the US consumer will trickle down to the deserving farmers and their families which will hopefully lead to improved employment opportunities to the entire region”, explained Jack Boyajian, President of BOCO Trade.

BOCO Trade will market items produced by the cooperative farmers so they can concentrate on what they do best:  Educate and train themselves and their workers on new techniques to grow healthy and consistent superior seafood. These techniques include using only organic and natural inputs into the production cycle.  For example, organic natural fertilizer produced locally helps to prepare floor in the aqua farms before stocking it with shrimp fry.  As the shrimp grow in the pond, use of probiotics eliminates the need for antibiotics and organic feed high in protein assure proper.  The result is natural and organically raised shrimp that is tender, sweet and delicious at an affordable price to the US consumer.

These new shrimp will be available for export to the USA in mid June of this year.  They will be initially introduced in select markets and will eventually be offered nationwide to retailers, whole clubs, restaurants, institutions and others.
